The three routes

Open, closed or non-surgical?

Open and closed are two ways to reach the nose. Filler is not surgery.

  • A clinician in scrubs showing a woman an image on a tablet in a bright room

    Open rhinoplasty

    Often used for
    Major reshaping.
    Anesthesia
General, or local with IV sedation.
    Recovery
    A splint for 1 to 2 weeks.
    Keep in mind
The final shape can take up to a year.
  • A woman resting on a sofa with a mug, looking out of a bright window

    Closed rhinoplasty

    Incisions
    Inside the nostrils.
    Anesthesia
General, or local with IV sedation.
    Recovery
Your surgeon gives your own timeline.
    Keep in mind
    Ask which approach suits you.
  • Gloved hands holding a small syringe upright beside a window

    Non-surgical (filler)

    What it can do
Smooth a small hump or support the tip.
    How long
Typically six months to a year, per ASPS.
    What it cannot do
Make the nose smaller or improve breathing.
    Main risk
    Injection into a blood vessel.

Some providers offer filler in the nose. The FDA has not approved any filler for the nose and lists the nose as an area of higher risk.

The basics

What a nose job is, and who it suits

Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose for balance with the rest of the face. It can also correct breathing problems from causes such as a deviated septum, which septoplasty treats. Cleveland Clinic describes a good candidate as someone whose face has finished growing, who is healthy, does not smoke and has realistic goals.

Risks

The risks to talk through

Cleveland Clinic lists infection, nosebleeds, a hole in the septum, poor healing or scarring, skin discoloration, a changed sense of smell, pain, an appearance you are unhappy with and the need for more surgery. About 15% of people have a follow-up operation for small changes: see revision rhinoplasty.

Questions

Questions people ask

Who will I talk to?

NYC Nose Job is a free referral service, not a medical provider. Your request goes to an independent New York surgeon’s office, which replies to you. NYC Nose Job may receive compensation from participating providers.

How much does a nose job cost in NYC?

ASPS gives a 2024 national range of $7,500 to $12,500 for the surgeon’s fee alone; anesthesia and the facility are extra. See the cost guide.

How do I check a surgeon’s credentials?

Check their board on its public lookup and their New York license on the NYSED search. The surgeon guide has the links.

Does insurance pay for a nose job?

Usually not for shape alone. Surgery mainly to improve breathing may be covered after an exam and prior approval. See septoplasty.

Can filler replace a nose job?

No. It cannot make a nose smaller or help breathing, and the FDA has not approved any filler for the nose. Read non-surgical rhinoplasty.

How long is the recovery?

Cleveland Clinic gives 1 to 2 weeks in a splint, 4 to 6 weeks before exercise and up to a year for the final shape. Your surgeon gives your own timeline.
