Recovery from a nose job comes in stages, and the last stage takes far longer than most people expect. Knowing the general shape of it helps you plan time off work, time away from the gym and, just as important, your patience with the mirror. These are the ranges published by Cleveland Clinic and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Your surgeon will give you your own.
NYC Nose Job is a free referral service, not a clinic or medical practice. The ranges below are general; your surgeon will give you your own timeline.
Surgery day
Cleveland Clinic describes rhinoplasty as an outpatient operation of 1 to 3 hours, under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. You go home the same evening, so someone must drive you home and stay with you overnight. In New York that means arranging a ride rather than taking the subway or a cab alone, and having a friend or family member at home that night.
Week one and two: the splint
You leave with a splint on your nose. Cleveland Clinic says it stays on for 1 to 2 weeks; ASPS says about one week. Swelling and bruising are part of this stage. Plan to rest, follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions, and keep the follow-up visit when the splint comes off.
Back to work
Here the two sources differ, which is a good reminder that recovery is personal. Cleveland Clinic says many people return to work or school in 1 to 2 weeks. ASPS says most return to work and light activity around three weeks. If you are unsure, plan around the longer figure and ask your surgeon.
| Milestone | Cleveland Clinic | ASPS |
|---|---|---|
| Splint | 1 to 2 weeks | About 1 week |
| Work or school | 1 to 2 weeks | Around 3 weeks, with light activity |
| Exercise and heavy lifting | After 4 to 6 weeks | Ask your surgeon |
| Swelling | Bruising and swelling 4 to 6 weeks; about 90% gone by 3 months | Can take up to a year to subside fully |
| Final shape | Up to 1 year | May take up to a year |
Weeks four to six: exercise
Cleveland Clinic says light exercise and heavy lifting can usually start again after 4 to 6 weeks, and that swelling and bruising last about that long. Ask your surgeon before you go back to running, weights, yoga or anything where your nose could be bumped.
Three months: most of the swelling is gone
By about three months, Cleveland Clinic says around 90% of the swelling has gone. Most people look like themselves again to friends and colleagues, while you may still notice small changes yourself. Keep any follow-up visits your surgeon asks for in this period, even if everything feels fine, and ask them about anything that worries you.
Up to a year: the final shape
The last of the swelling can take up to a year to settle, so the final result can take that long to show. This is why it is worth waiting before judging the result, and why any talk of a further change belongs after the nose has fully healed. Cleveland Clinic says about 15% of people have a follow-up operation for small changes; the revision rhinoplasty guide covers that.
If you also have septoplasty
Septoplasty on its own has a shorter recovery: Cleveland Clinic gives 1 to 2 weeks of initial recovery, light activity after about a week, strenuous exercise after about a month, and no nose blowing for 1 to 2 weeks. When it is combined with rhinoplasty, plan for the rhinoplasty timeline. More in the septoplasty guide.
When to call your surgeon
Cleveland Clinic lists the risks of rhinoplasty as infection, nosebleeds, a hole in the septum, poor healing or scarring, skin discoloration, a changed sense of smell, pain, an appearance you are unhappy with and the need for more surgery. Ask your surgeon before the operation which signs mean you should call, and who answers after hours.
Planning checklist
- Someone to drive you home and stay overnight.
- One to three weeks off work, depending on your job and your surgeon’s advice.
- No gym for 4 to 6 weeks, or as your surgeon says.
- Follow-up visits in the first weeks, so a surgeon whose office you can reach easily.
- Patience: up to a year for the final shape.
